Three-day APB/WSB R&J Course concludes in Italy with 20 countries represented

January 18th, 2017 / IBA

The first in a series of Referee and Judges courses set to take place throughout 2017 concluded on Monday, setting the tone for a year in which education will be high on the agenda for AIBA, its officials and its 201 National Federations. In total, 25 participants attended the event in Assisi, Italy which was open to all certified 3-star R&Js, representing the R&J communities of 20 different countries.

“This course was just the beginning of the R&J education programme that we have scheduled for the coming year and the Olympic Cycle to Tokyo 2020 as a whole, but it was extremely positive to see so many of our officials wanting to attend. It is vital that we keep monitoring, assessing and developing the pool of R&J expertise we have as well as educating the wider boxing family, so that the sport can continue to flourish,” said Ray Silvas, Chairman of the R&J Commission.

The three-day course began with a full update of changes to the Technical and Competition rules as approved during the Extraordinary Executive Meeting last December, followed by a thorough review of the importance of following procedure and the AIBA code. Participants underwent a full written exam and received practical assessment during sparring sessions. Those who pass the course will continue to be evaluated throughout the opening rounds of WSB Season VII, which begins on 3 February.
