Pat Fiacco – The level of the Asian Boxing Championships was high
May 1st, 2019 / IBA
AIBA Executive Committee member and President of Boxing Canada Mr. Pat Fiacco worked as Technical Delegate at the ASBC Asian Boxing Championships in Bangkok, Thailand. He shared his opinion about the level of the continental event, the work of the officials and organizing committee and the new stars of the tournament.
“The level of the ASBC Asian Confederation Elite Boxing Championships was very high for both genders. For the most part, every bout was very competitive.
I think that popularity of boxing is improving all over the world, and the evidence of it is that the smaller countries did very well in Bangkok. They may have not won as many medals as the bigger boxing countries but their performances in the ring were exceptional.
There are always new stars emerging at every championship. It would be unfair for me to name these boxers because I might miss a couple of them. It is safe to say that Asian boxers will leave their mark in the upcoming two AIBA World Boxing Championships in September and October.
The work of my ITO and Referee & Judge staff was very good at the event. They have an important job to take care of the technical aspects of the competition. The Referee & Judges’ job is to ensure that safety of the boxer comes first and they did that. They judged the bouts fairly and that is what we expect not only in that event but in the future as well. They were a great team in Bangkok and I am very satisfied with their work.
The Thai LOC did an amazing job hosting these championships. I have been to many major competitions and I can honestly say this has been one of the best. The Thai organizers had taken care of everything. The organizing committee was awesome, and I want to thank them for their hard work,” said Pat Fiacco.
