The second competition day of the All Africa Games consisted of 26 preliminary bouts, which entertained the watching fans in Brazzaville, Congo.

Winners from the Flyweight (52 kg), Lightweight (60 kg), Light Heavyweight (81 kg) and Super Heavyweight (+91 kg) weight classes all advanced to the quarter-finals of the competition.

Bout of the day

Nigerian veteran Ekele Danuloko has recently returned to the world of boxing following a break, and the 31-year-old Light Heavyweight began his quest for gold in Brazzaville with an impressive victory over Kenya’s Tobias Okeyi.

Danuloko used his aggression to impress in the opening round, and continued to assert his control in the second frame.

Okeyi rallied in the third round, but the earlier dominance of Danuloko was enough to secure the valuable triumph.

Team of the day

DR of Congo had not previously competed in any international tournaments this year, but won three bouts on Day 2 in the All Africa Games.

Flyweight National Champion Sankuru Nkolomoni started the winning run with a stoppage victory over Tunisia’s African Military Champion Montassar Bouali.

Mulaja Muluja delivered another great result for his country when he defeated Egypt’s Bocskai Memorial Tournament silver medallist Mahmoud Abdelaal at Lightweight, while DR Congo’s third triumph was delivered by Bambo Botumbe, who knocked out Mali’s Mahamadou Keita at Light Heavyweight.

Surprise of the day

Cameroon’s inexperienced Light Heavyweight Ulrich Yombo achieved a great result over Botswana’s African Zonal Champion Thabang Motsewabeng.

The Round-Up

Lesotho’s AFBC African Cup silver medallist Mokhoto Moroke proved his quality against Mozambique’s Helio Costelo Lanza.

One of the best bouts of the day occurred at Flyweight, when Nigeria’s Commonwealth Games competitor Taiwo Abiodun eliminated Zambia’s Emmanuel Kabwe.

Algeria’s WSB boxer Reda Benbaziz triumphed over Angola’s Paulo Jorge Britos at Lightweight, while Uganda’s Kennedy Katende defeated Zambia’s Peter Mekenuka.

Nigeria’s Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Efe Ajagba spent only a short amount of  time in the ring when he stopped Kenya’s former All Africa Games silver medallist veteran Super Heavyweight Daniel Shisia Nyambwena.

Fact of the day

Algeria have won all of their preliminary bouts in the opening two days, where improving nations of the continent including Congo, Lesotho and Guinea also won bouts on the second competition day.

Quote of the day

“I have arrived to the All Africa Games for the gold medal, and nothing else is acceptable for me. I had a tough veteran opponent in my opening bout, and I tried to use my dynamism to find the weak points of his defense. After one minute I felt that I could solve the bout,” said Nigeria’s Efe Ajagba.

Tomorrow’s program

The third competition day of the All Africa Games will consist of 30 preliminary bouts, across the Light Flyweight (49 kg), Light Welterweight (64 kg), Welterweight (69 kg) and Middleweight (75 kg) weight classes.
