Lawless victorious on day four of IBA Youth World Boxing Championships

IBA Junior World champion Siofra Lawless from Ireland progressed in the women’s 63kg competition on the fourth day of the IBA Youth World Boxing Championships at the Budva Sports Centre in Montenegro.

The Irish boxer remains one of the favorites in her weight category, and she stayed in contention by beating Safae Zoubaa from Morocco by referee’s stoppage in the second round. Odinakhon Ismoilova from Uzbekistan won by the same fate, beating Sophia Brettschneider from Slovakia.

Ourania Kantzari from Greece, the European silver medallist, made it through in the division too, beating Esmaul Husna Babat from Turkiye.

It would be the end of the road for Lawless’ teammate Tadhg O’Donnell, who was eliminated in the men’s 71kg in a split decision losing effort to Juan Pablo Franco from Colombia.

The women’s 60kg tournament saw Sofia Molchanova from Russia win by referee’s stoppage against Hinirau Nena from French Polynesia in the first round, while her compatriot Platon Kozlov dominated in the men’s 60kg in his match against Mohamed Anih Taidi from Belgium. Asian bronze medallist Damir Muibalikhonov from Tajikistan is through in the same tournament with a win against Igor Soczowska from Poland. Meanwhile, European champion Viktorio Venelinov Iliev from Bulgaria won by a unanimous decision at 60kg too, beating Venezuela’s Alvarado Cassiani.

European silver medallist Adam Maca from Albania also won in the men’s 60kg against Ivan Krivacevic from Serbia. IBA Junior World gold medallist and European champion Tolganay Kassymkhan from Kazakhstan won a split decision contest with Rakhima Bekniyazova from Uzbekistan, the Asian bronze medallist, in the women’s 60kg division.
