A new event in the European boxing calendar was unveiled last week as the Totana Youth Boxing Tournament got underway in Murcia, Spain. Following on the heels of the Boxam and Four Nations Youth Tournaments held there earlier in the year, it was further sign of the Spanish Boxing Federation’s commitment to the sport’s grass roots development.

Held across six weight classes – 52kg, 56kg, 60kg, 64 kg, 69kg and 81kg – it was the Spanish flyweight Jose Quiles who grabbed the limelight once again, having already taken gold in 2015 at the Four Nations. The 18 year-old overcame talented young Irish boxer Connor Quinn in the final, and now looks like a solid medal prospect at the upcoming EUBC European Confederation Youth Boxing Championships, held in Kolobrzeg, Poland at the end of November.

“It was a well-organized event in Murcia where I could fight infront of my family and friends. I got my tactics right, but the biggest difference between us was that motivation. Now I am preparing with full speed for the upcoming EUBC European Confederation Youth Boxing Championships – which will be my first major event as I started boxing only in 2010,” said Jose Quiles after the tournament.

Spain claimed three gold medals in the new youth event that is set to become an annual staple, with Jordan Camacho winning the bantamweight and Adam Trenado the light heavyweight.
