The three-time Olympic champion and member of the IOC Women’s Commission Irena Szewinska and former polo international and IOC member Syed Sahid Ali are in Astana this week, lending their considerable support to the 2016 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships.
With gender equality high on the IOC’s Agenda 2020, the growth in stature of women’s boxing has been firmly underlined by the quality of the tournament being staged by the Kazakhstan Boxing Federation in the capital Astana. The tournament’s success builds on the sport’s significant and ongoing development since its Olympic debut at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Mrs Szewinska and Mr Ali praised the level of organisation and competition at the Barys Arena, and gave their support to the continued growth of women’s boxing within the Olympic movement.
