Monday evening witnessed the second boxing gold medal bout of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, and it was Russia’s Evgeny Tishchenko who was crowned the new Heavyweight Olympic Champion as he defeated Vasilly Levit in a brilliant final. The top seed going in to the Games, Tishchenko looked in great form throughout the competition, but it took until the second round to find his rhythm. Once the famous long reach began to find its target it was hard for Levit to get close enough to score and Tishchenko’s arm was raised for a unanimous decision.
“There are no words right now, it was a very difficult bout. I am so proud of my gold medal. I want to thank my whole country and everyone who has supported me to make it to becoming Olympic Champion. I would like to congratulate Levit, he was the toughest opponent here in Rio and that was the hardest bout I have had,” said the new Olympic Heavyweight Champion Evgeny Tishchenko after the final.
The Heavyweight silver medal went to Kazakhstan’s Vasilly Levit, with Cuba’s Erislandy Savon and Uzbekistan’s Rustam Tulaganov winning the bronze.
