IBA CEO Chris Roberts OBE: How World Boxing pulls the wool over people’s eyes

September 21st, 2024 / IBA CEO column

It’s easy to pretend to be a “saint” on the backdrop of the IBA vs IOC long-running conflict. A random third organisation can just say they would “save the Olympic future of boxing”, give tons of unrealistic promises, and they would immediately receive a round of applause and small-circle recognition. Add eternal confrontation between West and East to this, and the total will be that several members from one side of the world will turn their heads towards “the saviour organisation”, which, in fact, is nothing but a joke.

You should easily recognise in these words the rogue boxing body, an organisation pretending to be an international federation. Let’s face the truth: they have nothing to maintain this status, neither the majority of the member nations nor financial support programmes or top-level events. They even do not have a proper office and sufficient staff members. Their $900,000 budget, announced back in 2023, must be fully spent by now. They pretend to be transparent, but it’s still not clear how they still exist and on what funds. There weren’t any financial reports made public.

Never has one organisation, namely World Boxing, spoken so much nonsense, in one statement, about their absurd inaugural tournaments… for fact, they are not inaugural, and secondly, the organisation poses nothing but a ‘White Collar’ unlicensed backdrop for athletes to compete. The lively ‘All Party Parliamentary Groups’ that share this mindset, I would suggest that they take a long hard look in the mirror, and attempt to measure what this organisation actually represents. Amongst those shared colleagues, and the absolute facade of fabricated truth, I despair!

Here is what they call a wolf in sheep’s clothing. To try to destroy something that was built and towered up successfully? Yes, they would. To provide their tiny membership with something worthy; opportunities, funds, voice? No, they would not. Because it’s easy to ruin and complicated to build something worthy.

They have nothing, present nothing, and continue to demonstrate the fantasy story of World Boxing, an organisation that “saves the Olympic future of boxing”. They should save the future of boxing from themselves first and foremost. Until such time as they provide solid evidence that enables our National Federations to hang their hat on, then I suggest they retreat back into the obscurity from which they originally emerged.. a complete load of lying diatribe! End of this ridiculous story… what a disgrace to the sport of boxing!
