September 4th, 2024 / IBA Courses

From 6-11 August, Saga City became a focal point for the future of boxing officiating in Japan with the successful hosting of the IBA 1-2 Star Referee & Judge (R&J) Course, conducted on the backdrop of the 78th All Japan Boxing Championships. Organized by the Japanese Amateur Boxing Association (JABF) in cooperation with the IBA, the course provided a crucial platform for the development and evaluation of national and 1-Star officials, setting new standards for boxing officiating in the country.

Led by instructor Mark Williams, the IBA 1-2 Star R&J Course was designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of aspiring boxing officials. Participants, who were either national or 1-Star officials, were engaged in an educational programme that included a detailed seminar, an online exam, and the practical experience of officiating live bouts at the championships.

The course took place in Saga City’s newly built arena, a facility that was described as being of “platinum standard.” The arena’s state-of-the-art design and infrastructure provided an ideal setting for both the R&J course and the boxing tournament. The JABF’s meticulous organization of the event, combined with the excellent facilities, ensured that all participants had everything they needed to perform at their best.

The course was aimed to refine the participants’ abilities in judging and refereeing, ensuring they meet the high standards expected at both national and international levels. The training  not only raised the standard of officiating for this event but also equipped the officials with the tools and confidence needed to excel in future competitions. This immediate application of newly acquired skills highlighted the effectiveness of the course, where theoretical knowledge was swiftly translated into practical excellence. The officials’ ability to adapt and improve throughout the tournament was a testament to the course’s comprehensive and practical approach to training.

‘The success of the IBA 1-2 Star R&J Course in Saga City is a significant milestone for the Japanese boxing officials,’ –  the International Relations Manager of the Japanese Amateur Boxing Federation, Miki Sanuni said. ‘We are grateful to IBA for having been given the opportunity to host the 1-2 Star R&J Certification Course in Japan. Our R&Js had a great learning experience from the best instructor.’

By investing in the education and development of its officials, Japan is ensuring that the sport’s integrity is upheld to the highest standards.
