As one of the most traditional boxing nations in the World, Germany has travelled to Bulgaria with high expectations for the AIBA Youth Wolrd Boxing Championships Sofia 2014. Will this hunger translate into a medal’ haul?

The Tension and the Drama
The German squad prepared to the AIBA Youth World Championships with a lot of events since November when their U18 National Championships was held as a selection competition. The best German youth boxers competed in the Pavlyukov Youth Memorial Tournament in Anapa, Russia and proved their excellent strength at the Brandenburg Youth Cup in Frankfurt an der Oder on home soil. Who will be able to step through in the previous performances and do real surprises in Sofia from their current team?

Ones to watch
The Lightweight class (60 kg) is extremely strong in the upcoming AIBA Youth World Championships and Germany’sWladislaw Baryshnik is also among the medal contenders. The 18-year-old boxer made his debut in the international level at the 2011 AIBA Junior World Championships in Astana where he reached the last eight and defeated strong athletes. Since then he delivered several medals from various international events.

Wladimir Fruehsorger robbed to the top boxers following his debut in the international level one year ago. He was defeated by Russia’s EUBC European Junior Champion Tamerlan Batdiyev in a hectic bout in the 2013 Pavlyukov Youth Memorial Tournament in Anapa where he did excellent combinations in the bout. Since that contest he secured silver medals in tough international events and might be he will be Germany’s secret weapon in Sofia.

Dominik Thiemke claimed a valuable silver medal at the 2012 EUBC European Junior Championships in Sofia and he would be satisfied with the same performance in Bulgaria this month. The Heavyweight class (91 kg) boxer has got enough experiences to win a medal in the AIBA Youth World Championships as well.

Germany’s new Super Heavyweight class (+91 kg) hope is 17-year-old Peter Kadiru who was quarter-finalist in the 2013 AIBA Junior World Championships in Kiev and claimed a silver medal at the Brandenburg Youth Cup on home soil. The Nigerian-descent teenager is a native talent in our sport therefore a medal would not be a surprise in Sofia.

Fact of the tournament
Germany will send maximum number of three female and ten male boxers to the AIBA Youth World Championships to Sofia. Their participating boxers are very experienced with a lot of bouts during their career therefore high level of boxing to be expected from the Germans.

Germany’s history in the event
Germany’s legendary World Champions in this age group were Enrico Berger, Thorsten Bengtson, Jurgen Brachmer and Athens 2004 Olympics bronze medallist Vitalij Tajbert. Since AIBA changed the name of the age group from junior to youth Germany claimed eight medals in the last three editions. The best result was achieved by Arthur Bril who took a gold medal at the 2010 edition in Baku.  In the last edition of the AIBA Youth World Championships Germany bagged two bronze medals in Yerevan where Omar El-Hag and Florian Schulz reached these podium places.
