Finalists confirmed for ASBC Asian Junior Boxing Championships

Semi-finals have concluded at the ASBC Asian Junior, Schoolboys & Schoolgirls Boxing Championships, ensuring our gold-medal contenders are set to touch gloves in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates.

Uzbekistan sit in pole position, with the best chance of claiming the most titles, to include representation in 17 of the 26 finals.

In the women’s events, Mavjuda Abusaidova and Maftuna Yangieva were victorious over Aidana Ubaidullakyzy from Kazakhstan and India’s Anshika Dabas in the women’s 80kg and 75kg weigh categories.

Their next opponents will be Anshika of India and Zarina Tolybay of Kazakhstan respectively.

Uzbekistan showed tremendous depth on the men’s side, returning 12 out of their 13 athletes to the finals. The sole casualty was Khikmatilla Sobirov in the 46kg category, who lost on a split decision to Mahdi Rouzbahani from Iran.

India and Kazakhstan also have high hopes with 12 and seven athletes into the finals also.

Both nations were more successful in the women’s tournaments, with nine and five athletes respectively. Highlights include India’s Amisha Kerketta defeating Mongolia’s Enkhchimeg Sansarmaa by RSC in the 54kg category, shortly before her teammate Yogima Kalyan did the same to Veronika Holovina in the 63kg category.

Kalyan meets Kazakh Alina Kudaigenova in the final, who also forced a stoppage in her match against Chia-Hsuan Tsai of Chinese Taipei.

Kudaigenova’s teammates Sabina Zhaksylyk and Zarina Tolybay also won by stoppage against Jordan’s Jana Al-Alawneh and An-Chi Tseng from Chinese Taipei.

Iran have qualified four men for the finals too.

Aside from Rouzbahani, Sahand Najafi defeated Kyrgyzstan’s Umar Orusbaev at 48kg and will now meet Uzbekistan’s Elyor Rustamov; and Ashkan Hashemi won unanimously over Iraq’s Yousif Saad Muhey Addin, ensuring he will meet Suhrob Rakhmatullaev from Uzbekistan in the 63kg final. The other Iranian finalist is Mohammad Saleh Mesbahi Ro, the victor over India’s Prashant in the 70kg division, who fights Uzbekistan’s Diyorbek Murodilloev for gold.
