Favorites start with successes at IBA Youth World Boxing Championships in Budva

IBA Youth Men’s and Women’s World Boxing Championships has successfully started with its first competition day on Wednesday. The International Boxing Association (IBA) has sponsored accommodation for all 593 boxers from 73 teams and three coaches per team to support those participants of the event in Budva, Montenegro.

Youth continental medal winners were in action on the opening day of the championships, as they hope to add world titles to their repertoire.

European champion Viktorio Iliev Venelinov from Bulgaria was victorious in his opening bout of the men’s 60kg tournament against Romanian Vasile Scalco. Asian champion Akmaljon Isroilov is part of a strong Uzbekistan team that travelled to the Balkans, and he started his campaign well against Poland’s Alan Figura by a unanimous decision in the men’s 86kg division. Venelinov’s teammate Stoyan Vasilev Petrov, the European silver medallist, started in the 86kg tournament too by causing a referee’s stoppage in round one against Zaur Azizov from Moldova.

Mukhammadazizbek Ismoilov, the Asian silver medallist from Uzbekistan, started well in the men’s 71kg division with a split decision win over Spain’s Jose Luis Saez. Türkiye’s European silver medallist Emine Kilinc is through after a split decision victory against Jamila Sultanli from Azerbaijan in the women’s 50kg division. Unfortunately, her teammate Tekdemir Hyseyin Ege, the European bronze medallist, did not progress in the men’s 86kg division after losing unanimously to Javier Rawlins Zatas from Cuba.

Tadhg O’Donnell, the European bronze medallist from Ireland, caused a referee’s stoppage in the opening round in his men’s 71kg contest, vanquishing Georgi Zaprinov from Bulgaria. Armenia’s European bronze medallist Erik Arstamyan won by split decision in the men’s 57kg category over Davit Mushkudiani from Georgia. Finally, Anna Maria Trifylli, the European bronze medallist from Greece, won by a narrow split decision verdict over Yagmur Baltaci from Türkiye in the women’s 48kg tournament.

One of 11 Junior World Champions from 2023, Tolganay Kassymkhan from Kazakhstan scored a unanimous victory in her kick-off bout against Joselis Youli from Venezuela.
