England and Finland fired up in Kolobrzeg on day three of European Confederation Youth Championships

Monday saw the third day of EUBC European Confederation Youth Boxing Championships action in Kolobrzeg, Poland, with 32 preliminary bouts across the bantamweight, welterweight, heavyweight and super heavyweight categories.
Finland’s AIBA Junior World Boxing Championship quarter-finalist Muhammad Abdilrasoon proved he has what it takes to go all the way in the welterweight class as he comfortably defeated Austria’s Marcel Rumpler. Abdilrasoon’s young team-mate Arslan Khataev also advanced to the quarter-finals after beating Germany’s Heluar Bako in a bout which he dominated from the outset.
The England squad had a great day in the ring, notching up three wins on Monday, with Carl Fail delivering in style as he overcame Germany’s Brandenburg Youth Cup welterweight winner Silvio Schierle.
“My tactics were to keep my distance, use the jab and dictate the pace of the bout. My German opponent was a top boxer and beat me in my last international tournament before Kolobrzeg, but I got my revenge here in Poland,” said Carl Fail after his key bout.
After taking bronze in 2014, Hungary’s Sandor Tar had to be at his very best to beat Ireland’s strong bantamweight Frankie Cleary, while Romania’s gold medal contender Robert Jitaru defeated his big rival Michal Takacs of Slovakia.
Takacs team-mate Andrej Csemez defeated Turkey’s Yunus Emre Batman to secure an opening-round welterweight win, while the heavyweight Nikoloz Begadze of Georgia looks a firm favourite for the title after outscoring Hungary’s Artur Kocze.
“I am happy of course, today’s bout was my first and a very important one. I am absolutely satisfied that I could stick to my plan against such a strong boxer. It wasn’t easy, and I wish him all the best in the future. I hope I can make the Georgians back home proud of my performance,” said 17-year-old Nikoloz Begadze, who is joined by Poland’s Maciej Zurakowski, Ukraine’s Junior World Champion Robert Marton and Austrian Aleksandar Mraovic in the quarter-finals.
The three super heavyweight favourites – Germany’s 2014 Youth Olympic Games winner Peter Kadiru, Russia’s Brandenburg Youth Cup winner Valerii Topuzyan and England’s rising star Daniel Dubois also won through to the quarter-finals.
