Brazilian APB boxer Robson Conceição was crowned Olympic Champion on Tuesday evening in Rio de Janeiro as 9,000 fans raised the roof inside the Riocentro Pavilion 6 venue. Up against Sofiane Oumiha of France for the Men’s Rio 2016 Lightweight (60kg) title, Conceição ensured the match got off to a breathless start, and while both boxers found their range and rhythm early on, it was Conceição who shaded the first round, and then fended off a late surge in the second to establish a commanding lead. It was a thrilling final three minutes as Oumiha battled to find a way back into the match, but it was to be Conceição’s hand that was raised, prompting wild celebrations from the thousands of boxing fans packed inside the stadium.

“I want to thank all the Brazilian people, all the fans who have spurred me on with their messages and thoughts. This isn’t just my medal, its for all of Brazil. This was the hardest bout of the Games for me, but i’ve trained hard, I was well-prepared, and i’ve come away Olympic Champion. The first ever Brazilian to win Olympic Boxing gold, and I thank the Brazilian Federation for pushing me on to this point today and being in my corner. Sofiane was a tough opponent, it was difficult out there tonight, and I want to congratulate him on helping to make it a brilliant final and I wish him a great future. And to my family, I love you!”, said an exhausted Conceição afterwards.
