The International Boxing Association (AIBA) unveiled today the official logo of the upcoming AIBA Junior World Boxing Championships 2015, which will take place in Saint-Petersburg, Russia on 4-12 September, 2015.
AIBA President Dr Ching-Kuo Wu said: “I am looking forward to the AIBA Junior World Boxing Championships and I am fully confident that the local organizing committee will deliver a fantastic event in Saint-Petersburg. Such competitions are the first step for any boxer who dreams about making a career in boxing and I am expecting to witness the highest quality boxing by the future stars of our sport”.
The logo features a tiger, which symbolizes youth, energy and vivacity, while the bridges in the background symbolize the traditional drawbridges of St Petersburg across Neva river. Every night during the navigation period in Saint Petersburg the 22 bridges across Neva and main canals are drawn to let ships pass in and out of the Baltic Sea.
Junior boxers between the ages of 15 to 16 will be eligible to compete in the 13 weight categories. The boxers’ registration will close on 7 August, 2015.
Boxing tradition is one of the oldest in Russia with the earliest accounts about the sport dating back to the 13th century. Russia boasts some of the best boxers in the world and their strong national boxing team has won multiple medals in international boxing competitions. Most recently in Baku 2015 European Games, Russia ranked second in the overall boxing competition medal count after securing ten medals over the 12 days of the competition, including four gold and two silver.
