Following the 2017 AIBA Commission Meetings from 27-28 February hosted by the Boxing Federation of India (BFI), AIBA President Dr Ching-Kuo Wu visited the Bijasan Boxing Club, the New Delhi-based gym founded to give young people from poor neighbourhoods the opportunity to practice boxing. Inaugurated 25 years ago, membership offers tutelage to 250 young Indian boxers and has been responsible for training some of the country’s brightest young men and women athletes and National Championship medallists.
“The BFI has clearly displayed its dedication to the future of boxing in India since its re-affiliation into the AIBA Family in December 2016. As it seeks to discover and develop the next generation of champions, it is to gyms such as Bijasan Boxing Club that we must provide the resources and structure to nurture talent from the very first spark of enthusiasm for the sport to realising their potential in competition,” said Dr Wu on Wednesday.
AIBA made a donation of gloves and protective equipment to the gym on Wednesday in an event that underlined the social qualities and personal values the sport of boxing offers to young people, and how they can shape a person to grow and to achieve, regardless of social background.
