Testing ground for future Olympic stars, the FISU World University Boxing Championships get underway in Thailand

The International University Sports Federations (FISU) World Boxing Championships take place in Thailand this week. Around 100 male and female athletes from 19 countries will take part in the competition, that is held at the Chiang Mai University in northwest Thailand from 3-8 October 2016.
The FISU Championships, of which boxing first became a part 12 years ago, comprise 33 different sports competitions held throughout the year. Since the awarding of the first boxing golds in 2004 in Antalaya, Turkey, the likes of China’s double Olympic Flyweight (52kg) champion Zou Shiming, Kazakhstan’s Rio 2016 Heavyweight (91kg) silver medalist Vassily Levit and Rio 2016 bronze medalists Souleymane Cissokho (69kg) and Anastasiya Beliakova (60kg) have all won titles, using the experience as the launchpad to global success.
