AIBA President Dr Ching-Kuo Wu has visited Iran as a guest of the Iranian Boxing Federation President Ahmad Nategh Noori, to discuss strategies towards the building of greater visibility for the sport in the country and the potential for an increased role of the National Federation within AIBA activities including the future hosting of international events. With the Women’s World Championships currently being held in Astana, Kazakhstan, President Noori also underlined his commitment to the development of women’s boxing as a central element of the National Federation’s approach.
President Dr Wu also met with the Iranian Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mahmoud Goudarzi and the President of Iran’s National Olympic Committee, Kioomars Hashemi, with whom the creation of an Iran Boxing Academy was among the subjects under discussion.
The AIBA President said he would welcome the deeper involvement of Iran’s National Federation after he met with several Iranian R&Js, emphasising the importance of ongoing training and career progression in line with the full pathway currently developed by AIBA.
President Wu wished the Iranian team well in their Rio 2016 efforts as AIBA Pro Boxing star Ehsan Rouzbahani is currently the sole Iranian representative to have qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, but two more qualification events to the men’s competition still remain in June and July.
