Singapore’s Kamarudin makes women’s boxing history at Hong Kong City Cup

The second edition of the Hong Kong City Cup closed out on 20 January with the Asian continent’s first boxing gold medals of 2016 awarded to elite and youth men and women boxers competing at the Pei Ho Street Sports Centre. The event saw an ecstatic Efasha Kamarudin make history by becoming the first ever female Singaporean to win an international boxing gold medal, defeating home boxer Lau Ching Ching to take the bantamweight title.
Kamarudin’s teammate Mohammed Hanurdeen Bin Hamid won Singapore’s second gold of the competition in the men’s bantamweight, but it was China who dominated the week, coming away with ten medals.
“I have been competing at international events since 2010 and decided to change my category to the bantamweight class a few months ago after the Southeast Asian Games. This gold medal marks a great success and proves I am in the best shape to get the results I need in this important year,” said Singapore’s former Youth Olympian Bin Hamid.
China’s Chen Xiaoling went better than the bronze she won in 2015 by taking the women’s flyweight title, while compatriot Guo Yingjie rounded off a successful competition for the team winning the men’s middleweight final against Ng Ping Tai. Chinese Taipei picked up the three remaining gold medals.
