AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships test event a success as Zhaina Shekerbekova defeats World Champion Nazym Kyzaybay

Kazakhstan hosted The Astana Women’s Cup in late October, using the occasion as an important test event for the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships that take place in the city in early 2016.
Among the pick of the bouts was the final of the flyweight category, which saw Incheon 2014 Asian Games silver medallist Zhaina Shekerbekova take on the reigning AIBA Women’s World Champion Nazym Kyzaybay.
In a rematch of the Kazakhstan Women’s National Championships final in April, Shekerbekova was once more victoriuos, whilst the impressive youngster Nazym Ishchanova, bronze medallist in the AIBA Women’s Youth World Boxing Championships in Taipei in May, took the lightweight title.
Dina Zholaman took revenge for her loss in the Kazakh Women’s National Championships by beating Rano Parkhatova in the bantamweight class, and AIBA Women’s Worlds silver medallist Yulduz Mamatkulova successfully returned to her original light heavyweight class, beating the more experienced Moldir Bazarbayeva in their gold-medal match.
“A gold medal in the Astana Women’s Cup does not guarantee a direct place in the national team at the 2016 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships, it was only the first step to getting there. Zhaina Shekerbekova once again defeated AIBA Women’s World Champion Nazym Kyzaybay with a great performance, but I liked seeing 18-year-old Nazym Ishchanova’s and Valentina Khalzova’s impressive development in the event”, said Mr. Vadim Pryssyazhnyuk, head coach of the Kazakh women’s national team.
