More than 200 bouts after the start of the 2015 AIBA World Championships, the first day of semi-finals gets underway on Sunday evening. Ten crucial matches will decide who will make it through to Wednesday evening’s light flyweight, bantamweight, light welterweight, middleweight and heavyweight finals.

Lightweight Rogen Ladon was only a late addition to the Philippines’ side following an injury to Mark Barriga, but he has come through three tough bouts brilliantly in Doha, guaranteeing himself at least a bronze medal. He now faces Russia’s European Champion Vasilii Egorov, who has enjoyed a successful 2015 in WSB and will be intent on reaching another major final.

Uzbekistan’s teenage middleweight sensation Bektemir Melikuziev eliminated Russia’s European Champion Peter Khamukov in their quarter-final, while his upcoming opponent, Ireland’s Michael O’Reilly, got his tactics spot on as he upset Kazakhstan’s defending AIBA World Champion Zhanibek Alimkhanuly. O’Reilly will need another tactical rethink if he is to overcome the quick Kazakh in what looks like being the bout of the day.

Thailand’s Wuttichai Masuk defeated Uzbekistan’s Fazliddin Gaibnazarov in the final of the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships in Bangkok earlier this year, and the match-up is repeated tonight as both light welterweights look to book a place in Wednesday’s final.
