OCBC President Tauhiti Nena commented on gender eligibility issue

February 11th, 2025 / IBA, OCBC

President of Oceania Boxing Confederation (OCBC) Tauhiti Nena made a statement on the gender eligibility issue following USA President Donald Trump executive order “No Men in Women’s Sports”.

“I am writing to express my support for President Trump’s recent executive order aimed at banning transgender women from participating in women’s sports. This decision is rooted in several key considerations that prioritize fairness, safety, and the integrity of women’s athletics.

First and foremost, the principle of fairness in competition is paramount. Women’s sports were established to create a level playing field for female athletes, and allowing transgender women to compete can create significant disparities due to inherent biological differences. These differences can lead to advantages in strength, speed, and endurance, which can undermine the competitive balance that is essential for all athletes.

Additionally, the preservation of women’s sports is crucial. Women’s athletics have made tremendous strides over the years, and it is vital to protect the opportunities and achievements of cisgender women. Ensuring that women’s sports remain a space where female athletes can excel and compete against one another is essential for the continued growth and recognition of women’s achievements in sports.

Safety concerns, particularly in contact sports, also warrant serious consideration. The physical differences between cisgender women and transgender women can increase the risk of injury for cisgender women during competition. Protecting the health and safety of all athletes should be a top priority, and this executive order addresses those concerns directly.

Moreover, the implications of Title IX cannot be overlooked. Title IX was enacted to ensure equal opportunities for women in education and athletics. By focusing on biological definitions and the unique characteristics of female athletes, we can uphold the spirit of Title IX and protect the rights of women in sports.

In conclusion, I wholeheartedly support the executive order banning transgender women from women’s sports. This decision is not only about fairness and safety but also about preserving the integrity of women’s athletics and ensuring that all female athletes have the opportunity to compete on an equal footing. I encourage continued dialogue on this important issue as we work together to protect the rights and opportunities of women in sports.”
