June 29th, 2024 / EUBC

Europe’s most promising athletes are vying for gold at the EUBC Junior European Boxing Championships in Sarajevo, following semi-finals at the Arena Hotel Hills.

Russia and Armenia will expect to be at the top of the medal table, with most of their remaining boxers making their respective gold-medal bouts.

The two countries are to face each other in three finals, one seeing Islam Magomedov take on Arno Darchinyan in the men’s 50kg weight category. Magomedov unanimously defeated Ireland’s Kalib Walshe while the Armenian forced the referee to step in before the end of round one against Bulgaria’s Antonio Damayanov.

Martin Sahakyan edged out Bulgaria’s Vladimir Ivanov Davidov at the men’s 60kg, meaning the Armenian meets Maksim Sobolev, a clear victor over Serbia’s Petar Sandic, in the final. Sobolev’s Russian teammate defeated Romania’s Andrei Robert Iofciu in the first round by referee’s stoppage to set up a men’s 66kg final against Samvel Siramargyan of Armenia, who was victorious over Davit Mkhetsadze from Georgia.

There will be 19 Russians and nine Armenian boxers in the finals, with one returning European champion, will be looking to strike gold again.

Tihran Ovsepian, also from Armenia, is into the men’s 54kg final after defeating Hungary’s Dominik Gombai unanimously. Moving up from the 50kg weight category, only Bulgaria’s Yanko Metodiev Iliev can stand in his way of a second crown. Iliev, last year’s 52kg bronze medallist, claimed victory over Russia’s Maksim Chaplygin.

Also a medallist from last year was Italy’s Sara Scorrano, who was the silver medallist in the women’s 66kg division. This year, she looks to go one better after making the final of the 70kg tournament, beating Shannon Warren of England by split decision in the semi-finals. Joining her is Russia’s Arina Riumina, also a split decision victor over Hungarian Vivien Kapcsos, who won the silver in this weight category in 2023.

A total of 26 finals are to take place on Sunday, 30 June at the Arena Hotel Hills in Sarajevo.
