The International Boxing Association (IBA) is delighted to announce a landmark development for the sport of boxing in Zimbabwe. IBA President Umar Kremlev concluded a successful official visit to Harare, where he met with the President of Zimbabwe, Mr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa.
During this visit, both leaders discussed various strategies to foster the growth of boxing in the country. A key outcome of these discussions is the decision to host the prestigious IBA Champions’ Night in the foreseeable future, a move that is set to spotlight Zimbabwe as a burgeoning hub for boxing talent.
President Kremlev expressed his enthusiasm for the mutual collaboration, stating: ‘We are witnessing the beginning of a new era for boxing in Zimbabwe. Our cooperation is more than just about sports; it’s a symbol of unity and strength. Not only will IBA Champions’ Night showcase the potential of local boxers, but also will bring the global boxing community together.’
President Mnangagwa welcomed the initiative, remarking that the government will provide necessary support to boxing.
The IBA and the Zimbabwean government are looking forward to creating opportunities for young athletes and fostering a spirit of international cooperation through these events. This partnership is a testament to the power of sports diplomacy and the unifying force of boxing.
The IBA President’s pledge to support grassroots development in Zimbabwe is a knockout move towards creating a brighter future for the sport and its champions in the country and on the whole continent. Following this initiative, IBA President Umar Kremlev paid a visit to Prince Edward High School in Harare. His actions — meeting with young boxers and students, distributing gloves, and proposing support for training camps — demonstrate a strong commitment to nurturing the sport at its foundational level.
This kind of engagement from the leadership of international sports organizations is crucial for inspiring and equipping the next generation of athletes. It’s through such initiatives that sports can truly flourish, supported by a community that values growth and education as much as it does athletic achievement.
