Defending champions succeed again at Youth European Boxing Championships

April 16th, 2024 / EUBC

Champions new and old were crowned at this year’s EUBC Youth European Boxing Championships in Poreč, Croatia – with two athletes returning to become two-time gold medallists.

Romania’s Amalia Maria Nita moved up one category to win a second title in a row – defeating Ukrainian Olha Pylypchuk unanimously in the women’s 75kg. Greece’s Panagiota Kouzilou would defend her women’s 57kg title successfully by beating home favorite Lana Paljusic from Croatia.

The hosts would also win bronze in the women’s 75kg, men’s 60kg and men’s 86kg thanks to Ema Plazina, Matej Marton and Josip Tokic.

Bulgaria’s Viktorio Iliev Venelinov went one better than his silver in 2023, this time winning the men’s 60kg final against Ukrainian Bohdan Cheldyk.

Some defending champions were unable to win again. Despite her best efforts at a higher weight, Poland’s Kinga Krowa – last year’s victor at 60kg – settled for bronze in the women’s 63.5kg, which saw Ireland’s Ava Rose Henry defeat Amalia Tugui of Romania in the final.

Davit Simonyan from Armenia would be denied a second gold medal in a row, losing the men’s 92kg final to English boxer Leo Atang – one of four champions from the British country. This put England second in the medal table behind Ukraine with eight golds and in front of neighboring Ireland with three titles to their name.

Sixteen of the 25 finals featured Ukrainian boxers, with the country featuring on the podium in 22 weight categories.
