The IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships is going to take place in Astana, Kazakhstan in 2024, as the IBA Board of Directors took the decision during their official meeting yesterday in Tashkent.

The bid was presented by the Vice President of International Relations, Aziz Kozhambetov from the Kazakhstan Boxing Federation, and the city of Astana was chosen to host the next major women’s event taking place next year at the Barys Arena.

‘I am happy that such a powerhouse in boxing like Kazakhstan is to host one of the biggest IBA tournaments. The competition has already taken place in Astana in 2016, and now comes back in a more powerful way, as we double prize money for women. For the first place we award the boxers $200,000 USD, and the overall prize fund is $4.8 million USD for all 12 categories. This amount includes 10% that belongs to the head coaches of the national teams. I am looking forward to a great Championships and greeting the boxers in Astana next year,’ IBA President Umar Kremlev said.

The Board discussed key issues of the organization before the International Olympic Committee (IOC) makes its recommendation towards governing body’s reinstatement. The Board of Directors decided on their next official meeting to July in Phuket, Thailand. Recently, the IBA provided a comprehensive 400-pages report to the IOC addressing all governance concerns. The IBA Ad Hoc Communication Committee reported about the current situation with the IOC.

Commenting the meeting, President Kremlev said, ‘We hope that the decision of the IOC will be based on facts and not on the assumptions. From IBA’s side, we did our utmost to inform the International Olympic Committee about all strides towards implementation of their recommendations and beyond it. We are fully transparent and open; we hope for the fair assessment of IBA’s significant progress as one of the best International Federations.’

The IBA improved its governance with democratic elections of the new Board of Directors in 2022 and crucial amendments to the Constitution. The organization is financially stable and provides support and prize money to its athletes. The judging system has significantly improved with officials vetting process and brand-new bout review system.

Following the resignation of Independent Director Elise Seignolle, there is one vacant Independent Director position on the IBA Board. The woman candidate from the Americas will be elected at the next IBA Ordinary Congress with the nomination committee starting the process immediately and where the candidates will take part in a comprehensive vetting process.

A complaint against Individuals affiliated to the National Federations has been submitted to the Boxing Independent Integrity Unit (BIIU) due to their participation in the governing body of so-called rogue world boxing organization. Moreover, the Board opened formal proceedings against National Federations of Germany, New Zealand, Sweden, and the Netherlands due to an alleged serious breach of the IBA Constitution and Regulations related to the participation in said organization.
