The International Boxing Association (IBA) Women’s World Boxing Championships quarter-finals will begin later today (Wednesday) with athletes from 33 countries still dreaming of glory in New Delhi.

No fewer than eight Indian boxers remain in the running for a place on the podium, thrilling home fans who have turned out in force to support their country’s top female athletes. Jasmine, Nitu, Manisha and Nikhat Zareen triumphed on Tuesday to join compatriots Saweety, Nupur, Sakshi and Lovlina Borgohain who were already in the last eight in their respective weight categories.

Jasmine, who overcame Tajikistan’s Mijgona Samadova in the previous round, is set for a blockbuster last-eight lightweight clash with Colombia’s Angie Valdés, who impressively swept past France’s Olympic champion Estelle Mossely yesterday. Nitu will face Japan’s Wada Madoka in the minimumweight division, while in the flyweight category, Sakshi will take on China’s Wu Yu and Nikhat Zareen will face Thailand’s Chuthamat Raksat.

Manisha will be up against Amina Zidani of France, while home favourite Lovlina Borgohain will encounter Mozambique’s Rady Gramane in the middleweight division. Saweety will also clash with Viktoriya Kebikava of Belarus in the light heavyweight division, and Nupur will step into the ring with Lazzat Kungeibayeva of Kazakhstan.

The Finals of the IBA Women’s World Championships will be staged over the weekend on 25-26 March, after the inaugural IBA Women in Sport Conference takes place on the sidelines of the event on Friday 24 March. Top athletes are competing across 12 weight categories at the event, which offers participants a lucrative prize fund of US$2.4m.
