The second stage of the All Africa Game quarter-finals was held on Day 5 in Brazzaville, Congo, where all three women’s categories and a further six men weight classes were in action.

Bout of the day

Tunisia’s AIBA Women’s World Championships competitor Kholoud Hlimi and Mozambique’s Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Angela Jose Machongua competed in the historic first women’s bout of the Games.

Machongua tried to take the lead in the opening round as her great jabs looked impressive, before Hlimi took control of the bout in the second round.

Hlimi continued her dominance in the latter stages of their Lightweight (60 kg) bout, and eventually won by split decision to claim a guaranteed medal in Brazzaville.

Team of the day

Namibia achieved a flawless fifth day of competition, beginning with a victory for Light Flyweight (49 kg) Matias Hamunyela over Kenya’s All Africa Games bronze medallist veteran Peter Mungai Warui.

Light Welterweight class (64 kg) Commonwealth Games silver medalist Jonas Junias then eliminated Mauritius’ two-time Olympian Richarno Colin by split decision.

Surprises of the day

Ethiopia’s Muhamed Feysal claimed a silver medal in the African Youth Games one year ago, and proved his elite talent by using quick combinations to eliminate Algeria’s Zoheir Toudjine.

Zambia’s Commonwealth Games Middleweight (75 kg) bronze medallist Benny Muziyo also sprung a surprise on Day 5 when he stopped Tunisia’s London 2012 Olympian Yahya Elmekachari in the opening round.

The Round-Up

Algeria’s AIBA Women’s Youth World Boxing Championships quarter-finalist Souhila Bouchene dominated her quarter-final contest against Ghana’s Quaye Ramatu at Flyweight (51 kg), while Nigeria’s AFBC African Cup gold medallist Kehinde Obareh excelled against Cameroon’s Christelle Aurore Ndiang in the Women’s Lightweight (60 kg) division.

There was success for Cameroon on Day 5 however, when Women’s Middleweight (75 kg) Yannick Azangue outpointed Sudan’s Sahar Mohamed.

Algeria’s AIBA World Boxing Championships silver medallist APB boxer Mohamed Flissi secured his place in the semi-finals of the Flyweight (52 kg) class after defeating Ghana’s Akimos Annah Ampiah.

Tunisia’s Bantamweight (56 kg) star Bilel M’Hamdi had to be at his very best to beat AFBC African Cup winner Ayabonga Sonjica.

Mauritius’ APB boxer Kennedy St. Pierre has recently moved up to Heavyweight (91 kg), and demonstrated the power of his hooks against Mozambique’s Joao Ferreira.

A future opponent for St. Pierre could be Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Efetobor Apochi, who stopped Algeria’s Chouaib Bouloudinat in spectacular fashion.

After the completion of the quarter-final contests in the All Africa Games, the following 22 nations have claimed at least one medal in Brazzaville:

• Egypt, Nigeria: 6 medals
• Cameroon: 4 medals
• DR Congo, Tunisia: 3 medals
• Botswana, Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, South Africa: 2 medals

“I had never wanted to win a fight so much than this one, because my opponent was the same one who defeated me in the final of the 2011 All Africa Games. I said to myself it is time for payback! Bouloudinat is a clever boxer, and he is also very strong, but not as much as me. I made him understand that I am at the next level of boxing, and destroyed his defense,” said Nigeria’s team captain Efetobor Apochi.
