Fourteen nations achieve medals at the Commonwealth Youth Games
September 8th, 2015 / All
The second competition day of Commonwealth Youth Games was held in Apia, Samoa, where 27 quarter-finals produced guaranteed medallists in the multi-sport event.
Bout of the day
England’s Youth National Champion Brandon Daord is a strong favourite for Flyweight (52 kg) gold, but he had to be at his very best to defeat Barbados’ Horace Phillips Memorial Tournament winner Jabali Breedy.
The Barbadian boxer battled hard throughout the entertaining bout and was a constant menace for Daord, but the Englishman’s tactical ability shined through in the latter stages.
Team of the day
Scotland achieved a perfect day of results in Samoa, beginning with a triumph for Golden Gloves of Vojvodina Youth Tournament winner William Stuart over Bangladesh’s Rakib Shak at Bantamweight (56 kg).
Lah Nimani Youth Tournament winner Kieran McMaster then walked over to the semi-final as his opponent Adrian Louis was unable to compete, while Welterweight (69 kg) John Docherty sealed Scotland’s third victory against Australia’s Youth National Champion Christopher Enyi.
Surprise of the day
Samoa’s youth Lightweight class (60 kg) star Iosefo Folesi has only competed in a small number of bouts in his career, but achieved a superb result in his home event against his Malaysian opponent Muhammad Asri Mokhtar.
The Round-Up
England’s Lightweight EUBC European Confederation Youth Boxing Championships silver medallist Dalton Smith controlled his second bout in Apia against New Zealand’s AIBA Junior World Boxing Championships competitor Keegan O’Kane-Jones.
A future rival for Smith could be Papua New Guinea’s Pacific Games winner Thadius Katua, who defeated Zambia’s Nkumbu Silungwe.
Seychelles’ Daniel Bonne eliminated Cayman Islands’ Hopkin Ebanks at Welterweight, while Northern Ireland’s Brett McGinty edged a close bout over New Zealand’s Ryan Scaife in the same weight class.

Quote of the day
“In my opening bout against the Australian my tactic was to lead him and counter-attack as he fell forward. I was satisfied with the win yesterday, but there is much more to come from me. My first opponent was a good tricky fighter, while I had to do much less in my second contest. I am respecting all of my opponents,” said England’s Dalton Smith.
Tomorrow’s program
The semi-finals of the Commonwealth Youth Games will be held tomorrow in Apia, through all weight classes from Light Flyweight (49 kg) to Light Heavyweight (81 kg).
