Fifteen nations earn medals in the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships
The second stage of the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships quarter-finals took place today, where 20 magnificent bouts thrilled the spectators in Bangkok, Thailand
Boxers from the Flyweight (52 kg), Lightweight (60 kg), Welterweight (69 kg), Light Heavyweight (81 kg) and Super Heavyweight (+91 kg) weight classes all fought for guaranteed medals, while the winners also qualified for the Doha 2015 AIBA World Boxing Championships.
Bout of the day
Kazakhstan’s AIBA World Boxing Championships silver medallist Ivan Dychko won the team title in Season V of the World Series of Boxing, and secured a vital victory on the eighth competition day over Uzbekistan’s two-time National Champion Bakhodir Jalolov.
Dychko defeated Jalolov in a preparation tournament last year, but the Uzbek Super Heavyweight opened their rematch using different tactics, as he used his speed to cause problems for the decorated Kazakh.
Things began to change in round two, when Dychko’s power punches began to make their mark on a tiring Jalolov.
Despite the huge amount of stamina expended by both men in the first two rounds, the energy levels remained high in an enthralling third frame, and it was Dychko who once again edged the action to ultimately clinch a hard fought win.
Team of the day
Mongolian celebrated a perfect day of action in Bangkok, beginning with success for Incheon 2014 Asian Games winner Dorjnyambuu Otgondalai over Thai Lightweight Pachanya Longchin.
AIBA Asian Olympic Qualifiers silver medallist Byamba Tuvshinbat then produced a great performance to eliminate Iran’s Amin Ghasemipour at Welterweight.
Tuvshinbat will next meet Kazakhstan’s star Daniyar Yeleussinov in a superb semi-final.
Surprise of the day
Philippines’ Eumir Felix Marcial won gold at both the 2011 AIBA Junior World Boxing Championships and the 2015 Southeast Asian Games, but was not the favourite against Thailand’s Saylom Ardee in their Welterweight quarter-final.
Ardee is a two-time Olympian and claimed silver in the last edition of the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships, yet could not get to grips with his talented young opponent.
Marcial’s aggression and strength proved to be the main difference between the two fighters, and he eventually prevailed to reach the final four of the competition.
The Round-Up
Kazakhstan’s WSB Team Champion Olzhas Sattibayev struggled in the opening round of his Flyweight bout with Turkmenistan’s Zarip Jumayev, but recovered to win their close contest.
His compatriot Daniyar Yeleussinov is the current AIBA World Champion winner, and he also made his country proud after defeating Chinese Welterweight Liu Wei.
Kyrgyzstan’s defending ASBC Asian Champion Azat Usenaliev controlled his quarter-final contest from the first seconds against Philippines’ Southeast Asian Games winner Ian Clark Bautista, while China’s Hu Jianguan outpointed DPR Korea’s Ri Chung Il.
The Chinese boxer not only used quick counter-attacks, but consistently powerful punches as well.
Japan’s President’s Cup winner Daisuke Narimatsu had to work hard throughout all three rounds of his bout with Vietnam’s Nguyen Van Hai.
Jordan’s ASBC Asian Confederation Youth Boxing Championships bronze medallist Hussein Iashaish is a very exciting Super Heavyweight prospect, and showed his undoubted potential with an excellent triumph over Sri Lanka’s Lahiru Tharanga Rathnadiwakara.

After the completion of the quarter-finals, 40 boxers have achieved guaranteed medals and Doha 2015 AIBA World Boxing Championships quota places from the following 15 nations:
- Uzbekistan: 8 medallists
- Kazakhstan: 7 medallists
- AIBA Team: 4 medallists
- Iran, Mongolia: 3 medals
- China, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Thailand: 2 medals
- Iraq, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Syria, Tajikistan: 1 medal
Quote of the day
“It was not an easy bout today as I had to box with a host nation’s boxer which is always hard in a big competition. From the second round I felt the fighting distance, and I knew I could win against the Thai fighter. I enjoyed the contest in the third round, and I now feel I can win the whole tournament,” said Mongolia’s Dorjnyambuu Otgondalai.
