The exciting quarter-finals of the Light Flyweight (48 kg) and Flyweight (51 kg) weight classes took place on the third competition day of the ASBC Asian Confederation Women’s Championships, where the winners of bouts at Featherweight (57 kg) and Lightweight class (60 kg) also secured their place in the last eight.

Bout of the day

China’s three-time AIBA World Champion and London 2012 Olympic Games silver medalist Ren Cancan competed in a brilliant bout on Day 3 against Kazakhstan’s Incheon 2014 Asian Games silver medallist Zhaina Shekerbekova.

Cancan struggled in the first round as Shekerbekova asserted her dominance early, before the Chinese athlete returned to her best form in the second frame.

Rounds three and four followed a similar format where both athletes traded punches, but it was Cancan who enjoyed the cleaner work, and she eventually prevailed by split decision.

The decorated Chinese star will now meet Mongolia’s Incheon 2014 Asian Games bronze medallist Nandintsetseg Myagmardulam in the semi-final.

Team of the day

DPR Korea enjoyed a hugely successful day on Day 3, as four of their boxers won significant bouts in China.

U Yong Gum sealed their first triumph with a clear victory over Vietnam’s Trinh Thi Diem Kieu at Light Flyweight.

Former AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships silver medallist Ri Hyang Mi then won her important quarter-final contest over Philippines’ Irish Magno to advance through to the Flyweight semi-final.

Ri Kwang Suk continued the winning run for her country as she controlled her Featherweight bout against Japan’s Misuzu Hayashi.

National Champion Ri Tong Sun delivered DPR Korea’s fourth triumph on Day 3 when she defeated Kazakhstan’s Gulzhaina Ubbiniyazova.

Surprise of the day

China’s E Naiyan only received the right to box in the ASBC Asian Confederation Women’s Continental Championships at the last minute, but she has now earned a guaranteed medal from this prestigious event after her second victory on home soil.

Naiyan was a big underdog against Philippines’ AIBA Women’s World Champion Josie Gabuco, yet defeated her decorated opponent to achieve the biggest surprise of Day 3.

The Round-Up

Japan’s Ayako Minowa continued her wonderful winning series and shocked another top boxer in Wulanchabu when she eliminated Thailand’s Sopida Satumrum.

Korea’s Oh Yeon Ji recently regained her place in the national squad, and defeated India’s Priyanka Chaudhary to set up a Lightweight bout with Mongolia’s Oyungurel Suvderdene.

23-year-old Mavzuna Chorieva has not been in the best of form recently, but the Tajikistan athlete is performing well in China, and dominated her bout against Sri Lanka’s National Champion and Clifford Cup winner Kasthuri Arachchige Keshani Hansika.

Fact of the day

Twenty-four medals out of the forty podium places have now been revealed in the ASBC Asian Confederation Women’s Continental Championships, where the following nations have gained honours so far:

• China: 6 medals
• DPR Korea, India, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan: 3 medals
• Chinese Taipei, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Vietnam: 1 medal

Quote of the day

“My opening bout was not the best of my career, but was enough to advance to the quarter-finals. I will try to punch more in my upcoming fight, and I hope to win the championships,” said Tajikistan’s London 2012 Olympic Games bronze medallist Mavzuna Chorieva.

Tomorrow’s program

The final day of the quarter-finals will be held tomorrow where boxers from the Bantamweight (54 kg), Featherweight (57 kg), Lightweight (60 kg) and Middleweight (75 kg) classes will be fighting for the guaranteed medals.
