The first competition day of the ASBC Asian Confederation Women’s Championships finished in Wulanchabu, China where the winners of the Flyweight (51 kg) and Light Welterweight (64 kg) matches advanced through to the quarter-finals of the event.

Bout of the day

Philippines’ Irish Magno claimed a silver medal at the Southeast Asian Games in June, which made the 24-year-old a serious gold medal contender in China.

Magno’s opening opponent was Chinese Taipei’s AIBA Women’s Youth World Champion Lin Yu Ting, who began boxing at the age of 13.

The Filipino fighter was confident in the opening round,  while her exciting opponent adapted to that level and impressed in the second frame.

Magno edged the latter rounds with her speed and accuracy the main difference maker, and she ultimately prevailed at the end of their entertaining bout.

Team of the day

Mongolia claimed two gold medals in the last edition of the championships, and they won two preliminary contests on the opening day in Wulanchabu.

Mongolia’s Flyweight Incheon 2014 Asian Games bronze medallist Nandintsetseg Myagmardulam outscored Uzbekistan’s veteran Nasiba Ruzimatova, while Light Welterweight Bayantsetseg Nyamjargal enjoyed a superb final round to eliminate Uzbekistan’s Ismoil Hamzaaliyev Memorial Tournament winner Emine Shmykova.

Surprise of the day

Pinky Jangra Rani replaced national legend and five-time AIBA Women’s World Champion Chungneijang Mary Kom Hmangte in the Indian team, and following her gold medal at the President’s Cup in April, she was a strong favourite in the Olympic Flyweight class.

The Indian boxer had to meet with Japanese veteran Ayako Minowa in the opening round, and began the bout in confident fashion.

Everything changed in the second round however, as a change of tactics from Minowa allowed her to use her powerful jabs to great effect against Rani.

Minowa’s stamina continued to excel in the final round, which led her to achieve the main surprise of the first competition day.

The Round-Up

DPR Korea’s Ri Hyang Mi 2005 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships silver medallist in the 2005 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships performed very well against Vietnam’s Le Thi Ngoc Anh at Flyweight.

Kazakhstan’s Incheon 2014 Asian Games silver medallist Zhaina Shekerbekova also delivered a great Flyweight performance when she dominated her battle over Sri Lanka’s Dulani Arachchilage Jayasinghe.

Shim Hee Jung claimed Korea’s first ever women’s medal in an AIBA championships last year in Jeju, and after that wonderful result she eliminated Chinese Taipei’s 20-year-old Kang Wei Ju at Light Welterweight.

China’s two-time National Champion Yang Wenlu replaced Xie Lili in the national team, and opened also her competition with a tough victory over India’s Ramilal Pavitra in the preliminary round of the Light Welterweight class.

Fact of the day

A record number of 96 boxers from 16 nations are attending the ASBC Asian Women’s Confederation Continental Championships in Wulanchabu.

“Our new hope in the Flyweight class Irish Magno was more confident in the bout than her opponent from Chinese Taipei. She had clearer shots in the second part of the contest, and won it clearly despite the fact she had a cold during the preliminary battle. Magno was really happy after the bout, and it was a good start for us,” commented Ed Picson, the Executive Director of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines.

Tomorrow’s program

The quarter-finals of the Light Welterweight (64 kg) and Welterweight (69 kg) classes will decide the first medals in the ASBC Asian Confederation Women’s Continental Championships on Day 2, while preliminary battles of the Light Flyweight class (48 kg) and Bantamweight class (54 kg) will also be held.
