The Queen’s Women’s Youth & Junior Cup, one of the last preparation events for the upcoming AIBA Women’s Youth & Junior World Boxing Championships recently took place in Stralsund, Germany.

Chinese Taipei’s Chen Nien Chin won the gold medal at the 2013 AIBA Women’s Junior World Championships in Albena, Bulgaria, and after joining the youth age group in 2014 she took a silver in the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games and a bronze at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Sofia.

As the upcoming AIBA Women’s Youth & Junior World Boxing Championships will be held in Taipei, Chen traveled to Europe to prepare with tough opponents.

The 18-year-old met France’s Davina Michel in the final of the Queen’s Cup, and won impressively via unanimous decision.

Team of the tournament
Italy sent a strong and talented team to the Queen’s Women’s Youth & Junior Cup where five of their athletes won their weight classes and topped the team rankings.

Italy’s best weapon at the youth level is Irma Testa, who claimed a gold medal at the 2013 AIBA Women’s Junior World Championships in Albena, Bulgaria while she later bagged a silver medal at the 2014 AIBA Women’s Youth World Championships.

The 18-year-old was too strong in the final of the Youth Featherweight class (57 kg) against Armenia’s Ani Hovsepyan.

AIBA Women’s Junior World Championships bronze medallist Roberta Bonati is also a world class level youth boxer who controlled her final over Germany’s Justine Metzdorf in the Light Flyweight class (48 kg).

Concetta Marchese and her younger sister Giovanna both won their weight classes in Stralsund, while their last gold medal was achieved by 16-year-old Vittoria De Carlo in the Junior Welterweight class (66 kg) following her close victory against Germany’s Leonie Mueller.

Surprise of the tournament
Sweden’s Stephanie Thour recently joined the youth level in January and she was able to win the Lightweight class (60 kg) in Stralsund.

Thour defeated France’s talented Lea Couvercelle in the semi-finals and Italy’s favourite Francesca Matrusciello in the gold medal bout.

One to watch
Armenia’s AIBA Women’s Youth World Champion and Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games competitor Anush Grigoryan is a strong fighter who will be travelling for the gold to Taipei.

The Flyweight class (51 kg) star utilised her excellent footwork to defeat Sweden’s new sensation Katrin Noren, and became the best fighter in the youth section of the tournament in Stralsund.
