A marathon program took place on the fifth competition day of the EUBC European Youth Continental Championships in Zagreb, Croatia where the quarter-finals were held.

Bout of the day
Bulgaria’s Daniel Asenov achieved his career highlight in the EUBC European Junior Continental Championships in Anapa, Russia one year ago where he bagged the gold medal.

The 17-year-old Bulgarian boxer defeated Italy’s Marco Amoroso in the first preliminary round, and advanced to the quarter-finals in Zagreb.

His opponent in that round was Ireland’s William Donoghue who won the AIBA Junior World Boxing Championships in Kiev, and the Irish boxer had competed in two contests in the championships previously.

Despite his tiredness from having had one more bout than the Bulgarian, Donoghue tried his best and attacked from the first seconds, but Asenov’s footwork was better, and his counter-attacks reached the target accurately in the second part of their battle.

Finally Asenov’s hand was raised after the bell to secure at least a guaranteed bronze medal.

His next opponent will be Azerbaijan’s EUBC European Youth Continental Championships silver medallist Masud Yusifzada who also took part in the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games.

Team of the day
Ukraine has a relatively low number of four athletes in the quarter-finals, but all of their talented young fighters were able to reach their next target in Zagreb.

Their first guaranteed medal was achieved by Denys Pesotskiy, and the 18-year-old boxer defeated Ireland’s EUBC European Youth Continental Champion Gary Cully by unanimous decision.

Ukraine’s most successful youth athlete Oleksiy Tokarchuk also advanced to the semi-final stage of the championships in Zagreb, where he was too strong for Belarus’ Stanislav Kuptsou at the Welterweight class (69 kg).

Vladyslav Rolenko trains in the city of Kharkiv and is only 17, but provided top quality boxing once again in the event, and beat Latvia’s Artjoms Hanevics at the Middleweight class (75 kg).

Ukraine’s fourth triumph in the quarter-finals was achieved by their Heavyweight class (91 kg) athlete, and Youth National Selection Tournament winner Konstantin Pinchuk, who eliminated Turkey’s Muhammet Baki Yalcin with an impressive performance.

Surprise of the day
France’s Jordan Rodriguez, the Brandenburg Youth Cup winner achieved a positive result in Zagreb when he defeated Russia’s Aital Diakonov in their Bantamweight class (56 kg) battle.

His next opponent will be another top boxer, Moldova’s EUBC European Junior Continental Championships silver medallist Dorin Bucsa who defeated England’s Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games bronze medallist Peter McGrail.

Ones to watch
Belarus’ EUBC European Junior Continental Champion Dzmitry Asanau moved up to the Bantamweight class (56 kg) after the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships, and he was able to win the Liventsev Memorial Tournament in Minsk recently.

He has been excellent in Zagreb as well where he was too smart for Albania’s top youth boxer, Rexhildo Zeneli in their quarter-final contest.

He will now meet with Romania’s 17-year-old Robert Jitaru in the semi-final of the championships.

Germany’s Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Champion Peter Kadiru defeated Latvia’s Evanders Servuts in the opening round of the EUBC European Youth Continental Championships in Zagreb, and he continued his winning path against England’s talented Daniel Dubois in the quarter-finals.

Stat/Fact of the day
Six Russian advanced through to the semi-finals, while Norway achieved two medals in Zagreb, which is their best ever performance in the history of the championships.
