The third competition day of the EUBC European Youth Continental Championships delivered some unexpected results, with the Croatian stars Luka Plantic and Toni Filipi, who claimed silver medals in the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships in Sofia in April, also opened their long route to anticipated final glory on home soil.

Meanwhile, France’s EUBC European Junior Continental Champion Louis Toutin became the first athlete to defeat a Russian boxer in Zagreb.

Bout of the day
Louis Toutin was an unknown athlete at the international level prior to the 2013 EUBC European Junior Continental Championships, which was held in Anapa, Russia.

The French Middleweight class (75 kg) boxer defeated all of his opponents in that junior event, and won the gold medal in Anapa.

He later joined the youth level in February, and arrived in Zagreb as a secret favourite of the category.

Toutin had to meet with another top boxer in Russia’s Youth National Champion Shamil Khatayev who trains in the city of Grozniy in Chechnya, and Toutin’s ringside built up the tactics of a lot of footwork against the relatively static Russian boxer.

France’s fighter was fresh enough in the opening round to take the lead, and offered some great combinations in the second frame as well.

The French boxer received a warning from the referee in the final round as he tired, but his overall efforts were enough to beat the Russian hope in Zagreb.

Team of the day
Scotland’s head coach was not satisfied after the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships where his athletes were not able to get a quota place for the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games, but their talented team was great on the third competition day in the EUBC European Youth Continental Championships in Zagreb, where all of their three boxers advanced to the quarter-finals of the event.

Firstly, their Lightweight class (60 kg) boxer Lewis Hay was able to beat his strong opponent, Azerbaijan’s EUBC European Junior Continental Championships bronze medallist Nurlan Naghiyev.

British Youth Champion John Docherty moved up to the Middleweight class (75 kg) since his last appearance in the international level, and started well enough in Zagreb where he defeated Bulgaria’s AIBA Youth World Championships quarter-finalist Nikolay Chavdarov.

Scotland’s third unanimous triumph on Day 3 was delivered by their tough Heavyweight class (91 kg) boxer Connal McDonald who eliminated Slovakia’s Michal Gavaj.

Surprises of the day
Finland’s new top talent Kalle Kallioinen qualified to the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games and provided a top quality of boxing in the AIBA Youth World Championships in Sofia.

The Middleweight class (75 kg) boxer was more experienced than his first opponent, Italy’s Giovanni Sarchioto who is at his first year at youth level, but the Italian boxer shocked the Finnish youngster and knocked down his rival very quickly, leading to the referee stopping their bout in the opening round.

Ones to watch
One of Croatia’s best hopes for a gold medal in the event, AIBA Youth World Championships silver medallist Luka Plantic demonstrated his power against Bosnia & Herzegovina’s Enid Numanovic and the referee stopped the bout very quickly.

His star teammate, Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games silver medallist Toni Filipi continued the winning path of the host nation, as he defeated Azerbaijan’s AIBA Junior World Championships bronze medallist Shukran Mehdiyev at the Heavyweight class (91 kg).

Norway’s Mostar Youth Tournament winner Martin Larsen is a talented athlete who moved up to the Middleweight class (75 kg) since the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships, and the Norwegian boxer knocked down Moldova’s Anatolie Dimura with the referee stopping their unequal contest in the second round.

Stat/Fact of the day
Norway, Albania and Czech Republic all secured at least one quarter-final place on the third competition day of the EUBC European Youth Continental Championships.

Czech Republic’s Lukas Dekys has already won two contests in Zagreb and he is near to get at least a bronze medal in Zagreb, which would be the first one for his country since 2009.

Tomorrow’s program
The next part of the second preliminary round has been scheduled for the EUBC European Youth Continental Championships in Zagreb, Croatia.

Boxers of the Flyweight class (52 kg), Bantamweight class (56 kg), Light Welterweight class (64 kg), Welterweight class (69 kg) and Super Heavyweight class (+91 kg) will be fighting for the places in the Top8.
