Russia’s former star boxer Aleksey Tishchenko won two gold medals in the Olympic Games, firstly in Athens in 2004 and in Beijing 2008.

His success led to a tournament named after him, which is held in the city of Omsk in the Siberian region of the Russian Federation.

Russia, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan all bagged gold medals in the Aleksey Tishchenko Prizes Tournament.

Athlete of the tournament
Uzbekistan’s Ulugbek Mubinov won their National Elite Championships in December 2012 following his successful junior and youth career.

He also claimed a silver medal at the 2013 ASBC Asian Youth Continental Championships in Subic Bay, Philippines where he was defeated by China’s Zhang Zhe in a hectic final.

Mubinov is only 20, and he is still young among the boxers who compete at the Super Heavyweight class (+91 kg).

The young Uzbek hope defeated Russia’s Aleksey Yemelyanov in the semi-final and another athlete from the host nation’s delegation, Andrey Batyrev in the gold medal bout in Omsk.

Mubinov’s footwork was at a different level than his experienced opponents which resulted in a gold medal for the talented athlete.

Team of the tournament
Russia claimed five gold medals in the event, with their first coming from veteran Bantamweight class (56 kg) class Zinat Zhandybayev.

At the Light Welterweight class (64 kg) Vyacheslav Svischev defeated Turkmenistan’s National Champion 19-year-old Sunnet Annaseidov in the semi-final, and Russia’s Taron Ogannisyan could not stop him in the gold medal bout.

At the Middleweight class (75 kg), Vitaliy Dakhnenko defeated Kazakhstan’s Danat Imanbekov, while Akhmed Magomedov beat his teammate Nikita Patrin 3:0 in the Light Heavyweight class (81 kg).

Russia’s new Heavyweight class (91 kg) hope Tigran Abraamyan claimed their fifth gold medal following his triumph over Uzbekistan’s 21-year-old Sardor Yormukhamedov.

Surprise of the tournament
Uzbekistan’s Ulugbek Dusmurodov competed for the very first time out of his country but he was able to win the Lightweight class (60 kg) where he triumphed over three strong athletes in Russia’s Kairat Isin, Danil Starodubov and Dmitriy Yukteshev.

Ones to watch in the future
Azerbaijan’s Salman Alizada claimed the gold medal at the 2011 EUBC European Continental Championships in Ankara, Turkey, and the Azeri star fought against Turkmenistan’s National Championships silver medallist Osman Hajiyev.

Alizada was too strong for Hajiyev and the referee stopped the contest during the second round.

EUBC European Youth Continental Champion Parviz Bagirov of Azerbaijan defeated Russia’s London 2012 Olympics bronze medallist Andrei Zamkovoy at the Korotkov Memorial Tournament this year, and therefore he was the main favourite of the Welterweight class (69 kg).

The 20-year-old athlete defeated Kazakhstan’s Aydar Tashev in the semi-final of the tournament and Russia’s Arman Kurmanalinov in the final when the ringside doctor stopped their bout in the second round due to an injury.

Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan also sent teams to the Aleksey Tishchenko Prizes Tournament despite the fact that the Asian Games were also being held during the event.
