The European Boxing Confederation’s third continental event of 2014 is the EUBC European Women’s Youth & Junior Championships, which will be held in Assisi, Italy from July 20 until July 27.

The registration procedure for the event has now closed, and a record number of athletes will compete for medals in the continental event.

Altogether, 224 women boxers are planning to take part in the championships in Assisi, which will see many of the greatest youth athletes in Europe compete against each other.

The Tension and the Drama
Women’s boxing makes its debut at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games, which will be held shortly after the upcoming EUBC European Women’s Youth & Junior Continental Championships.

With two high calibre events taking place in such close proximity, each competitor will be looking to peak at the right time, and to avoid injuries or burnout.

Ones to watch in the event
Sweden’s AIBA Youth World Champion and EUBC European Junior Champion Agnes Alexiusson is one of the best youth boxers in the entire world, and she qualified for Nanjing 2014 in April.

The 18-year-old Lightweight class (60 kg) boxer only reached the quarter-finals of the AIBA Youth World Championships in Sofia earlier this year, and she will want to perform better in Italy ahead of possible Olympic glory in Nanjing.

Poland’s defending AIBA Youth World Champion Elzbieta Wojcik is another highly regarded young boxers, and she also competes in Assisi.

Wojcik had a narrow bout against London 2012 Olympic Champion US star Claressa Shields in the final of the 2013 AIBA Women’s Youth World Championships in Albena, and will be hoping to take her excellent 2014 even further, by living up to her gold medal expectations in the upcoming EUBC European Women’s Youth Continental Championships as well.

France’s AIBA Women’s Junior World Championships silver medallist, and European Union Junior Champion Santiana Meurant is a highly talented boxer, who will be fighting in the youth Flyweight class (51 kg) in Assisi.

The French star won’t turn 17 until August, but she has already been boxing for seven years, and has amassed enough experience in her career for many boxing insiders to tip her for gold in Assisi.

Her biggest rivals for the top spot include Netherlands’ top youth athlete Alicia Holsken, Russia’s Ekaterina Paltceva, Italy’s Roberta Bonati and Turkey’s Neriman Istik.

Fact of the event
118 junior, and 106 youth boxers are on the entry list of the EUBC European Women’s Youth & Junior Continental Championships, where Russia, Turkey and Ukraine will be competing with the maximum number of thirteen junior and ten youth boxers.

Among the developing European women boxing nations, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Kosovo and Slovenia will be sending representatives to take part.

History of the event
The European Boxing Confederation decided to launch the event for the women’s youth and junior boxers after the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Yambol, Bulgaria held the first edition of the championships, while Sangatte in France and Orenburg in Russia have also hosted the spectacle.

The last event was held in Wladyslawowo, Poland where the Russian delegation took home almost 50% of the gold medals.

Some of the previous winners of gold include Savannah Marshall of England who went on to become AIBA Women’s World Champion, while Anastasia Belyakova of Russia achieved the gold in the EUBC European Women’s Continental Championships in Bucharest last month.
